Best way to distribute a SQL Server Database RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I'm developing a Windows Application (VB.NET 2005) and I'm using a SQL Express Database (2005).

The application is mostly single-user, but in some especials situations it can be multi-user (2-3 users).

    My question is:

    - What is the best way to distribuite my application?

    - If I add the mdf file to the project other users can access it? If so how can I install the other clients (since the mdf is part of the solution)?

    Thank's in advance

  • If it works to script your database (meaning if you don't require it to have too much data in it when installed, thus avoiding endless insert statements in the script) you can execute the script to create the db and all of its objects as part of a custom action in your windows installer.  You can also specify SQLExpress as a prerequisite, meaning that if it is not installed on the client computer during the installation of your app, it will download SQLExpress as part of the installation.  See this thread for more details.

    Hope that helps,
