Detecting User before engagement RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to know if the following scenario is possible before starting a project.

The kinect will be used in a retail location and be positioned about 8 ft from the front door on top of an lcd display.

    I need to:

1 - As people enter detect if there is a person stopped in front of the display.
2 - If 1 = true is the person standing still and looking at the screen for >2 seconds.
    3 - If 2 = true play a video greeting.

Is this possible? Any advise you be great!

    Thanks, Justin.

  • Yes,

The Kinect v2 has a range of .5m to 4.5m, which is roughly 1.5 ft to 14ft. This means it can accurately track body joints of 6 people within this range.

    1 - Yes

    2 - Yes

    3 - Yes

Things you need to be made aware of:

Will the device be pointing into direct sunlight? If so your IR/Depth sensors won't work well.

Will the device be sitting behind a glass window? If so you have to test your application against different windows as the Kinect device may not behave exactly as you intend due to window causing issues.
