Character Map is outdated

    General discussion

  • Character Map looks visually outdated and that also reflects some limitations in its functionality.

    In terms of UI, it still resembles an app designed for Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000:
    - It has a gray background;
    - The UI is not using Segoe UI as the font;
    - There's a generic Help command button that should be replaced by a native question mark icon within the UI chrome. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa511449.aspx);
    - The program's icon does not provide a clear representation of its functionality (a game piece with random characters is somewhat misleading) and thus should be replaced. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa511280.aspx);
    - There's a glitch in which when clicking on a character to expand it, if the character is located near the scrollbar, the expansion popup is overlapped by the scrollbar. The following picture depicts the issue occuring on a Windows Vista PC but it also occurs in Windows 7 and the Windows Developer Preview: http://www.windows7taskforce.com/uploads/charmap_glitch7.png

    Regarding functionality, it should match that of the Insert Symbol dialog in Microsoft Office:
    - It lacks a recently used characters section, which betterments the program's accessibility;
    - Automatic correction feature;
    - Shortcut keys (these also should be global across Windows and should not change with localization);
    - Option to open the IME Pad;
    - Special Characters separated into a different section in the UI for easier access.

    - Advanced view should be canned and its functionality should always be visible as the term "advanced" does not qualify for this usage scenario.

    Further suggestions, UI and UX quirks are welcome. Please share your thoughts on the subject. :)
