Question

Has anyone installed Windows 8 dev preview on a Dell M6600? How about dual booting the system with Windows 7? Did Hyper-V work?
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan
Yes, I only have some issues when using RDP. Everything else works just great!
Here is the most updated NVidia driver from Dell http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&deviceid=27257&libid=6&releaseid=R310801&vercnt=3&formatcnt=0&SystemID=PREC_M6600&servicetag=&os=W764&osl=en&catid=-1&dateid=-1&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=true

I'm on the Dell Precision M6500 (1 gen earlier) and have both Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows Server 8 Developer Preview running under VMWare 8. Little sluggish, most likely because I don't give VM's much space to breathe. If it'll work in that, I'm sure it can work straight on the hardware.Wednesday, September 21, 2011 6:38 AM

Yes, the Windows 8 Desktop Preview will install and work fine.
If you enable the virtualization on the bios you will be able to add the Hyper-V role. You will then be able to run VM's and create the Virtual Switch using the wired and the Wireless nic
If you install the Windows 8 Server Preview, you will also gain the possibility to have NIC team working for the Wireless and the Wired NIC, which means that you can combine and failover

To determine if you can install Hyper-V on this system download CoreInfo
from:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/cc835722
Run it from an elevated command prompt with the -v switch and ensure that
both VMX and EPT are listed as being supported. Note that EPT (SLAT) is
only required on the Windows 8 client, it is optional on Server.

Thanks Alessandro,
I deciding on a new system want to also be able to use it for W8 dev. The M6600 comes with a touch screen. Do you know if that should work with W8 too?

Hi Dan
Yes, it should work.
That said, I am having some issues with the NVidia video driver : when I RDP to the VM's the sometimes it takes a while to show the screen and then I got a message complain a bout the NVidia driver. Also it's a bit slow when RDP to my VM's and I presume it is because the video driver.
I downloaded the most updated from NVidia, but still.
But, it should work fine with touch screen and I would say that the experience will be amazing!

So the NVidia driver issues were only when using RDP? Did things work as expected when running directly on the hardware?
What driver did you download from NVidia? Theoretically the 3000M driver for the M6600, because it is for a mobile, is only available from Dell... or can you just use the 3000 driver?
Sorry to pepper you with questions but we are adding a system here and would like to add one that would do double duty for Metro development...

Thanks for the confirmation and the pointer. My m6600 should be delivered in about a week and I'll be able to try it out for myself :-).

Hi again Allessandro,
Did you install the preview on an M6600 or a similar model? I'm trying to do the install onto an m6600 onto a VHD but get an error that say a needed driver is missing. Did you have to add any drivers? I have a CD with all the DELL drivers but that doesn't seem to have the driver I need. Is there a way for me to figure what driver it is looking for?
The error occurs right after I hit the "Install" button during the install process.
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan
I installed using the Windows 8 ISO, not onto a VHD. Also, I did not have to provide any Dell Driver at the installation time

I'm also installing from the W8 ISO, but I get the "missing driver" error (looking more closely now it says it need the driver for the DVD drive) before I even get to pick the partition to do the install on. Once I get to that point I'm going, I hope, to install onto a vhd.
I'm working on plan B now, installing Virtual Box.
