Does Virtual Earth seriously have planets and satellites? Is there a way to find all entities of a certain type? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm looking at the list of entity types for Virtual Earth (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728811.aspx) and there's some wild stuff in here, like tectonic plate boundaries and celestial bodies. I can't ever find any planets when I search for them on the VE API, so I assume that not all these entity types are fully populated. Is there a list or report anywhere for what's populated and what isn't?

Also, if VE did return a planet, what fields would that entity even have?

  • The list of entities types are those provided by the data provider. I haven't found any of these either but I've also never seen this before... maybe there is a new feature coming. I'll ask around.

  • I found a couple others that looked a bit odd but was able to get the geocoder to return some results with these entities. The celestial bodies and planets still look odd and haven't found any in the geocoder. Also worth pointing out that the reverse geocoder only supports a subset of these entities: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff701710.aspx
