Quesions about Kinect SDK beta and the final version... RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi, I've downloaded the Kinect SDK for Windows 7 32bit. I want to make programs with Visual C# 2010 Express but at this time I haven't a Kinect sensor, but I've some questions about the SDK.

    1) In the final version of the SDK there will be the implementation of identity? I want that my program can to recognize a face.

    2) There is a plan to introduce the speech commands in italian language?

    3) I've a plan to make in the future a small robot that can use Kinect for his sensor system. I've red that Kinect requires an external power source, not only USB. This is a problem, in the future it will be possible to use only USB port or I will have to buy a portable battery?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

Microsoft have made any offical statements around the roadmap for the Kinect for Winodws SDK, or the Kinect device so you are unlikey going to get any direct answers. Currently facial recognition is not built into the API - but you do have access to a raw RGB video feed that can be used by third party libraries to provide this functionaly. Speech recognition is managed by the Microsoft Speech SDK. I do believe they have additional language packs, so you can certainly experiment with this. The Kinect sensor only provides the high quality microphone, it's down to the software layer to handle to recognition of words.

In regards to a robot - you do need to provide the Kinect with additional power (due to the limitations of USB), so you would need to look at a battery to power this. Check out JellyBean which has a similar contruct: http://channel9.msdn.com/coding4fun/articles/Jellybean-the-Kinect-Drivable-Lounge-Chair

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks,
