Backup ISP provider -- help!

Question

Hello, i have installed a backup line from another isp and i need some help about how to setup WSP with my second IP so when one ISP is down the server will go on other ISP. I have WSP 1.1.1 on a windows 2008 enterprise with one smartermail and some websites. Any help will be appreciated! Thank you.Tuesday, August 23, 2011 3:40 PM

Having two ISP lines is way more complex because it should be visible to "outside world" under one IP address. Point of having more than one name server is to have redundancy with DNS resolving for example when you have backup mail server outside your server room which is not accessible in some point of time.
Seriously two ISP with different IP addresses is not the way how this should be handled.

I have both IP setup on my registrar as ns1.mydomain.co=8X.XX.XX.25 and other IP from my second ISP ns2.mydomain.com=8X.XX.XX.171. All domains are setup with both NS and on WSP- Web Sites Shared IP Address is --All unassigned-- i have added second IP to MS DNS...when i am on ISP 1 everithing is working fine, when i change on ISP2 some pages work some not, smartermail as well and i think is something wrong with my dns records or setup....if i ping from external on www.mydomain.com is trying to reply with IP from the ISP1 when my server is on ISP2...i hope you guys understand something from what my problem is :) .. last days was so hard for me so help. You can't just switch from one ISP to another where you have different IP addressesWednesday, August 24, 2011 8:57 AM

Because DNS is being cached on clients computers or other different servers. Thats why when you've disabled ISP and pinged your website host was resolved using IP from first disabled ISP. This is not something which will switch in one second so sorry but this solution will not work too good. You can try to adjust TTL value:
http://www.ntchosting.com/dns/ttl.html
but I still think this is not the right way to do this.

if i try to access www.mydomain.com at ns1.mydomain.com(ISP1) and failed, traffic wont be redirected to www.mydomain.com ns2.mydomain.com(ISP2)? or what is the point of second name server? .... i am at learning stage now so dont be mad on me :)... so there is no way for my webserver or mail server to be up all time with 2 isp lines? i really need my mail server to be up all time....Wednesday, August 24, 2011 4:39 PM

If you want 2 ISP you will need
- 2 ISP (off cource)
- PI IP adresses
- AS nummber
- BGP enabled service with both ISP
- Some device that will handle the BG routing
