Clustering/Mirroring RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hiya,

We may have a requirement for clustering and mirroring SQL, across 2 sites (30Mb leased line between them).

We want a setup where users in office A point to their local SQL server and users in office B point to their local SQL server, but if their local SQL server goes down, they're transitioned to the working SQL server in the other site. This will need to include ODBC connections on client computers.

Pretty much what DFS-R offers for file storage.

  • Hello,

If there are two seperate databases, 1 for each side then this won't be a problem. If they all work out of the same database, it wouldn't be possible to use mirroring as the mirror database is unavailable. You'll need to change the connection string to have the failoverpartner specified as well and test the failover along with adjusting the timeout for mirroring so that false failures don't affect the mirroring.

Edit: This is exactly what Availability groups do, except it must all be contained in a single cluster which doesn't meet your requirements but I just wanted to point it out.
