OS edition is switching RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using Windows Server 2016 Standard edition with containers. From time to time OS edition is switching between "Standard edition" and "Datacenter edition". It occurs spontaneously, without any reason. Other Windows 2016 hosts without docker, don't switch OS edition.

Does anyone know what might be the reason of such "switching", when docker containers are installed and running ?

  • How and where do you see this edition being switched?

  • I can see it in System's information (screenshot is here -!Arw4NLaHvR7SjWCzpLlWT5N7b9DA). Windows edition (highlighted on the screenshot) is switching from Standard to Datacenter and back. Monitoring system (zabbix), also sends me alerts when OS edition is changing. It uses WMI,  Win32_OperatingSystem class.

Systeminfo.exe also reports changed OS edition.

  • That's really bizzare and I never saw this before. My understanding reboot is required for changing edition so I'm not even sure how theoretically it's possible. May be it's not docker related.

You can enable auditing on changes to registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion and see if you can check which process does it and when.

  • Thank you for this hint.

I will try to enable audit for HKLM\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion and also for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Auto. The last one contains key "OSName" with value "Windows Server 2016 Standard"
