Upgrade AlwaysOn AG 2014 -> 2016 / Side-by-Side possible? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to install 2016 side-by-side on the same host or on a different host, Join the 2016 SQL to the existing 2014 AG's, failover, and do the same with the other host, and then effectively removing the "old" 2014 one's?

    Or is the recommended (and only?) way to actually do this by doing an in-place upgrade of the existing instances?

  • Hi Michel,

    Firstly, it is possible that upgrade alwayson availability group with the 'side-by-side' method, however, it is not recommended to implement upgrade that way. As indicated in this article, each server instance must be running same version of SQL Server within a AlwaysOn group. In other words, you can only join SQL Server 2016 to the existing SQL Server 2014 availability group as a means to upgrade, but it will not be supported for extended periods of time. Besides, a WSFC node can host only one availability replica for a given availability group, you can only install 2016 edition on a different host.

    Secondly, we suggest you upgrade alwayson availability group by using the following steps, which is recommended by Microsoft. For more information, you can review this article:  https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn178483.aspx  .

    1. Remove automatic failover on all synchronous-commit replicas.
    2. Upgrade all remote secondary replica instances running asynchronous-commit secondary replicas.
    3. Upgrade all local secondary replica instances that are not currently running the primary replica.
    4. Manually fail over the availability group to a local synchronous-commit secondary replica.
    5. Upgrade the local replica instance that formerly hosted the primary replica.
    6. Configure automatic failover partners.
