Download Visual Studio 2011?

    Question

  • Can we get the 2011 installation to use in Windows 7? Developing in my Windows 7 installation by using the win8 simulator would be great.

  • No this won't work.  The simulator has some specific requirements of it that are a part of Windows 8.

  • To be more specific, Metro apps need WinRT which is only available on Windows 8.

  • That's pretty frustrating.  It would be nice if I could compile Metro style apps on Windows 7 and then just remote debug them on my Windows 8 tablet or Windows 8 VM.  The BUILD conference talked a lot about the remote debugging capabilities of Windows 8 so this would be a perfect use case!

  • Hi Aquarius-eyes,

Currently only the Windows Developer Preview with developer tools (x64) supports Metro style app development.  There is no supported way to upgrade the other images to develop Metro style apps.
