SQL Licensing issues , prod is ent using TDE, which version for dev/staging? RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi folks:

Our organization is ramping up TDE features deployment to all existing prod servers and SQL enterprise version has to be upgraded.

Now, the issue is for the dev/staging env.  Will all dev/staging have to be upgraded to Enterprise ? this is going to be a huge

amount of capital cost to the organization if that is true.   The prod db has to be restored to the dev/staging where sensitive data will be scrambled by developers for security reason.

I know that MSSQL Developer version has all the feature of enterprise. However, I also heard that it is mandatory that prod data usage be forwarded to MSFT for screening purpose? is that true?

    thanks

     Hui

  • Hi Hui,

SQL developer edition includes all the functionality of Enterprise edition, but is licensed for use as a development and test system, not as a production server.  If you do not using it for product, you do not need to upgrade SQL server developer to Enterprise edition.

Please refer to Editions and supported features of SQL Server.

For License issue, I suggest that you can consult professionals in this area. please call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. Or you can go to Volume Licensing Service Center support. Please choose region/language and choose to call or have web. People there will help you more effectively.
    Hope this could help you.

If I misunderstood your issue, please let me know.

Not if you upgrade to SQL 2019 where TDE is available in Standard Edition.

What are they running today? If they are running Developer Edition, and you are confident that this is compliant the the license for Developer Edition, you can keep on running Developer Edition.
