Restore with URL from a backup of different instance credential error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all

We are using Azure Blob Storage to backup our databases. We can restore our backups in the same instance without problems, but when we try to restore a backup from a production instance to staging it doesn´t work.

We created the credential to access the production backup Blob Storage in the staging instance and when we run this command to see the content of the production backup:

RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM URL = 'https://XXXXXXX.blob.core.windows.net/YYYYYYYY/full/ZZZZZZZZZ_20200510_230454.bak'

    we get this error:

    Msg 3289, Level 16, State 1, Line 13

A Backup device of type URL was specified without a Credential, Backup/Restore operation cannot proceed.
    Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 13
    RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally.

    Why ? Any ideas?

    Best regards

  • Hello Eliseo - Madrid,

According to this error message, it seems caused by the Credential issue. Please make sure The user account that is used to issue BACKUP or RESTORE commands should be in the db_backup operator database role with Alter any credential permissions.

SQL Server requires that either an Azure account name and access key authentication or a Shared Access Signature and access token be stored in a SQL Server Credential. This information is used to authenticate to the Azure account when performing backup or restore operations.

More details, please refer to SQL Server Backup to URL

Hope it will help. If this issue still exist, please share us more detail error message in Errorlog.

    Best Regards

    Dawn
