Who wants TLS 1.2 on WEC2013? RRS feed

  • Question

  • As you may know, Microsoft has recently added TLS 1.2 to WEC7, but so far has not added TLS 1.2 to WEC2013.

I've asked Microsoft whether there are plans to bring TLS 1.2 to WEC2013 and the initial answer was "no, and there are no plans to bring this to WEC2013 either".

I later had a call with Microsoft about this (and some other issues), and now the answer is "we are discussing whether we should".

Microsoft has asked me to collect names of companies wanting TLS 1.2 on WEC2013, so if you want TLS 1.2 on WEC2013 please send me an email (you can use the form here) so I can add you and your company name to the list of interested parties.

  • Several of our customers and other companies on the list I provided to Microsoft have let us know that Microsoft contacted them with the news that

TLS 1.2 WILL BE ADDED TO WEC2013

    Great news!

I won't be able to officially confirm until I have received word from Microsoft this is indeed the case, but it sounds like our efforts have paid off.

Thanks everyone who helped getting this result!

  • Hi Michel,

I have posted a link to this on the LinkedIn Windows Embedded Group but I don't have access to the Yammer group anymore.  If you have not already, that might be a good place to ask this question.

    Sincerely,

    IoTGirl

  • Thanks for looking into this Michael. I added the companies I represent to the list of interested parties. As I stated in my email to you that you can forward to Microsoft, it comes as a surprise that this port hasn't been done already. WEC2013 is still in mainstream support. It is hard (becoming impossible) to do https calls directly without this support. Thanks!

  • Hi Michel,

My company (Conduent Business Solutions) is interested by this feature (TLS1.2 on WEC2013).

Actually, we plan to use OpenSSL but i don't know if it is the good solution (we already use it on WINCE6 and WEC7).

    Regards,

    Fred

  • Fred,

Can you please contact me using the form here so I have your direct contact details? Microsoft will need that to get a business impact statement from you if they need to.

  • Hi Michael,

Have enough companies expressed interest in WEC2013 TLS 1.2 to motivate Microsoft to port this to WEC2013?

    Thanks!

  • I'm giving more companies and people the chance to respond until 23 July 2018. On that day I will send my compiled list of companies to MS.

I'll let you know the final tally here in this forum post. There's already many, but the more the merrier, so please send me a quick email if you need TLS 1.2 on WEC2013 now or you think you may need it in the future.

    Thanks all!

  • Final tally 12 companies, some very big ones included.

Hoping it will be enough for MS to make the decision to implement TLS 1.2 also for WEC2013.

I know I did my best...

    Thanks to all who responded!

  • Hi Michel,

Has Microsoft let you know when this will be included in Compact 2013?

    Thanks!

  • No, only a rumor that it will take 3 months or more. No idea why it would take so long. It should be a simple recompile for WEC2013, but I may be completely wrong.

  • Hi Michel,

The coding might not take that long but the cross platform testing can take over 6 weeks then bundling into a package once it is validated can take a couple of weeks more.  I suspect they always ball-park 3 months when it is not specific to one chipset.

    Sincerely,

    IoTGirl
