Custom Timephased fields in Timesheet RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We are using Project Server 2010.

I have defined 4 Custom Fields like this:

    • Entity: Task.
    • Type: Text
    • Custom Attribute: Multiple Line of Text

I have add this fields in a custom Timesheet View.

I want my resources could fill this Fields every day in their Timesheet (My Timesheet Period is One Day) for each tasks...

and then I want to create a report to track them for each day.

I want to see them like Timephased Data Fields...

    Is it Possible?

  • Any thing is possible thru customization, but this feature with Timesheets is not available from out-of-box views using PWA.

  • Hello Shadi,

As an alternate or workaround, You can try with Task/Assignment Note fields. Anything you enter in the drilldown page of My Tasks will get into the Notes field for the task, and not the assignment Make sure that also needs to be accepted by project manager before it will even get there. If they are not accepted by PM, You own't gett he data.

The notes field for the assignment is available in Project Professional and also via the Project Server Interface for programming & customization (You may need to use Projectdatatset object in Project.Assignment. Item(i).ASSN_NOTES) but is different to the Notes against the task assignment.

If you add the Notes field to the Task Usage view in Project Professional you can see both the Task level notes and the Assignment level notes.

    Also, another method

    Does that help?

  • Hello Shadi,

You can create a table in Reporting database or in a custom database which contains the information of timesheet/user/task data & assignment level notes field. You can have it in a web part just below the My timesheet/task page, when user enter the hours in task, it should enable the text field box in below webpart where the user can put the comments.
It will require the Timesheet web service/ Statusing web service & your custom WCF which will call these servives & update the data in custom table. I believe this can be done but will definitely require the good understanding of PSI & WCF, lot of samples are avilable on MSDN & blogs.

You can also think about the investemnt on resources, cost & maintenance of solution, there are third part tools available which can help you to get the soultion quickly, should be around 2k-3K USD.

Also if you can define something as a standard set of comments on Timesheet , you can use the lookup table for timesheet comments, You can use what christophe says in below article:

  • Hi Amit

I have read christophe's blog post. our custom fields hav look up tables.but sometimes i have lost some data.

When a resource submite timesheet, everything is OK. but when a Status manager approve Status Update of projects and publih the project, old data lost...

  • As mentioned Shadi, there is no support for timephased fields within Project Server timesheets.  Also there can be confusion between task fields and assignment fields.  This may be where you think you are losing data.  If you need to persist this in a timehpased manor then you would need your own tables to hold this information and probably use an event handler to copy the data to your tables on certain events.

    Best regards,

    Brian.
