Create WBS structure/Task Hierarchy pragrammatically into Project Schedule - Project Server 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We are implementing Project Server 2010 and the requirement is to create WBS structure/Task Hierarchy pragrammatically into Project Schedule. It is like integrating with SAP.

On Project Information page the PM will enter the SAP project unique identifier and program should be run which will fetch all the other project information like location, branch, total cost etc from SAP database into project level custom fields. Also it should fetch from SAP database the WBS structure/tasks and create the same into Project schedule with the same task hierachy. If there is any addition/deletion of tasks/WBS into SAP it should be reflected in Project Server schedule afterwards. What apporach should we take for the requirement. Can we use the OpenProject event for updation of project schedule? Also what are the risks involved with this approach? • Hi Dipti--

PSI doesn't work for defining a work breakdown structure (WBS) code mask.
Please see the limitations of PSI:

  • Hi,

Yes, the Project_Open event can be used to create (in VBA f.i.) or modify the Outline. I cdo not see too many risks but programming will not be easy because of potential exceptions when modifying. YOu could use methods such as OutlineIndent and Outline Outdent.

  • Thanks Amit and Jan

We do not want to define the WBS code masks in schedule. What we need is to create or update schedule on some event where tasks hierachy is fetched from SAP database. The WBS element of SAP, we will be storing in task custom field.

The updation of schedule can be done in Project_Open event. Which event should we use to create the project schedule in project server? The customer will be creating the project before it will be created in SAP. When the project is created in SAP, then only we want to create the schedule in project server.

Also while modifying we will be needed to create new tasks or delete tasks which will be deleted from SAP.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Sorry, I do not know enough on Project Server programming to help you here. Linking SAP to Server is not obvious - I know of a company whose business is just developing solutions around that problem, so do not underestimate.
