Using Application Settings and User Settings RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have developed an EXCEL COM AddIn (VSTO 2010) that supports Excel version 2010 and upwards.

The AddIn makes use of .Net framework's User Settings capability and it works great.

Reference link to using Application and User Settings: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb397750(v=vs.110).aspx

What are the scenarios under which user will lose the User settings that has been persisted in the local machine?

(AddIn's version upgrade definitely keeps the settings, so there is no problem there.

Users who use Office 365/Excel 2013 noticed that the User Settings getting lost when an office update is pushed by MS).

    Thanks.

  • Hi B.Manohar,

As far as I know, the user.config file, which is created at run time when the user who runs the application changes the value of any user setting. The file is loaled in the path like below:
    C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\ConsoleApplication\ConsoleApplication1.vshos_Url_jh3yhjus0jvxvuxdpqabiimuxm3cf3sw\1.0.0.0

Based on my understtanding, update Office wouldn't change the cofnig file for the settings. Please ensure that the users didn't remove this file manually or by other software.

    Hope it is helpful.

    Regards & Fei
