SSDT 2017 installation along with Visual Studio 2017 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have tried installing SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT 2017) V 15.7.1 using SSDT Standalone Installer on already installed Visual Studio 2017 Professional instance (V 15.7.3). Instead of opening as a separate IDE, SSDT (AS, IS, RS) got integrated with VS 2017. Even though, we can create AS, IS & RS projects using templates from VS 2017 I would like to have a separate IDE for SSDT. Any idea on how to get the separate IDE for SSDT would be of great help.

SSDT is a plugin for Visual Studio and when VS is already installed, then SSDT is integrated as new project types; you can not have a "separate" IDE, it's always VS.

  • Then you can install SSDT from SSDT installer after removing VS installation

  • Previously I had Visual studio 2012 & SSDT 2012 as separate IDEs. So, in VS 2017 both are integrated. Please correct me if I am wrong. Just wanted to get a clear idea for my understanding.

SSDT itself is based on VS shell, so didnt understand what you mean by integrated

Even without VS being already there, installing SSDT will install a limited shell for VS with all BI project types/templates included
