2005 SQL Move RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I currently run 2005 SQL on 2003 server x86.  I have purchased a new server and am running 2008R2 as the OS and would like to know if microsoft licensing would allow me to uninstall 2005 from the old 2003 server and install on the new 2008r2 box, also is there a version of 2005 that will even run on 2008r2?

    Thanks

  • Hello,

About the question regarding licensing, it will depend if the license you have is based on CPU
, and what is the CPU configuration on the new hardware.

However, SQL Server does not keep track of licenses, but I am sure you still may want to know if your current license supports that. In this case, I would suggest you to call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. You can also visit the following site for more information and support on licensing issues:

    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/mla/default.aspx

Only a Microsoft Licensing specialist should give you an answer to a licensing question.

About the second question, if you receive a warning about SQL Server 2005 is not compatible while installing it on Windows Server 2008 R2, please continue setup. After finishing installation, install SP3 or SP4 for SQL Server 2005, to make it compatible.
