Looking for instructions on setting up SMTP services on a Windows 2008 Standard server.  Is there a link to a whitepaper or could someone please point me in the right direction. I tried adding a ROLE using server manager, but SMTP is not a service to install.

    Thank you,

    James Armstrong

    Hi James,

Look under Features in Server Manager and you can add the SMTP-Server Service.

  • Hi James,

You might be hard pressed to find much in the way of "official" setup documents for the Windows Server 2008 SMTP Feature.  Unlike the past SMTP Server services provided by IIS 6.0 in Windows Server 2003 (which were offered and supported by the IIS team), the new SMTP Feature of Windows Server 2008 has supposedly been moved to the Exchange team's responsibilities at Microsoft, although I have yet to find the Exchange team supporting or documenting the product.  The IIS 7.0 web site (www.iis.net) mentions this several times and offers little about the SMTP Feature except to outline how to employ it on asp.net web pages of an IIS 7.0 web site.

That being said, basically the SMTP Feature can be added to Windows Server 2008 via Server Manager in the Features node.  You will notice that IIS 7.0 is a prerequisite, but only the IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility group's two role services entitled IIS 6.0 Metabase and IIS 6.0 Management Console.  If you add the SMTP Feature to the OS via Server Manager GUI or ServerManagerCMD.exe CLI these prerequisites will be automatically installed.  If you add the feature via scripting, WMI or other methods then you may need to go back and manually add these two IIS 7.0 role services.  (Note: another prerequisite for the SMTP Feature is the Windows Server 2008 SMTP Server Tools Feature which provides the necessary snap-in to the IIS 6.0 Management Console.)

Once the SMTP Feature has been installed with all supporting prerequisites, use the Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager console from Administrative Tools to configure and start your SMTP virtual servers.

    Hope that was helpful.
