Live connection Analysis Serivices MD error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I'm trying to connect a multidimensional cube to Power BI via live connection. When I upgrade the cube in UDM it works but if I leave it as it is, it does not work. Here is the error that I have:

We couldn't connect to your Analysis Services database. Double-check that your server and database names are correct, and make sure you have permission to access them.

  • Hello,

Finally found the solution. In the Cube2 we have partition and i got this warning when i build :

Consolidate partitions for measure groups with 5 or more partitions that have less than 2 million rows or are smaller than 50 MB in size.

When i reduce the partition, it works well. I think, that when Power BI try to load the model, it can not because not sufficient space.

  • What version of SSAS are you using? What do you mean by "upgrade in UDM" (UDM stands for Universal Data Model and is what they originally called the Multi-Dimensional model back in 2005 when it was first released).

  • Hello,

I am using the version 2016 of SSAS Multi-Dimensional. and in my first model of Mult-Dimension, i have 5 cubes. And just one of them don't work. But when i upgrade the one that does not work in UDM (unified Dimensional Model), i can connect it with power bi. I don't understund why when i do that it works but with other it does not work.

    Regards,

    Amar

  • I still don't understand what sort of "upgrade" you are talking about. But if that fixes your issue why not just do that?

SSAS 2016 should work fine with Power BI. There are a few features in Multi-Dimensional that will not work with Power BI like personalization extensions, but most cubes should work fine.

  • Ok, sorry if my word are not correct, but to give you an example of what i mean about "upgrade" is :

    • I have a database SSAS MD that contains cube1,cube2 and cube3

When i try the live connection throw my SSAS MD database and connect to cube1 or cube3 it works, but when i try for cube2 it does not work.

    • When i upgrade my cube2 into SSAS database MD.

    My connection work.

And yes it resolves my problem actually. But i just want to understand what's the differnce.

    Regards,

    Amar

  • I still don't know what you mean by "upgrade" - there is no right-click "upgrade" option or anything like that.

Are you possibly saying that you copy the cube to a new database?

If so it possibly means that either cube2 in the original database is not in a fully processed state or you are in a role which does not have permission to the cube (but if you are a server admin the roles will not be an issue as server admins have access to all cubes in all databases)

You could try connecting to Cube2 in SSMS and doing a processDefault on it to make sure it is in a processed state.

No, that is almost definitely not the issue. Client tools are completely unaware of partitions, they are a back end performance feature and are not visible to client tools like Power BI and Excel.

This is purely a warning as having too many small partitions can affect query performance, but it won't affect Power BI's ability to connect (unless you had many hundreds of partitions in which case you might get a delay while connecting, but it should still work eventually)

The more likely explanation is that Cube2 was not in a fully processed state and when you've deployed the partition change Visual Studio has also done it's default processing which has had the side effect of fixing your original issue.
