Find unused term sets in SP Online tenant

    Question

  • Hi,

We have reached max cap of terms in term store in our tenant in SP online environment and we are not able to add  any new term in term store. We want to identify the unused term sets - termsets that are not mapped to any field in any site collection and delete them so that we can add new terms. Please let me know if there is a method (OOB or CSOM) to identify the unused term sets without looping through each site collection and checking each lists/ libraries to get this information.

    Thanks,

  • Hi All,

We did this with another way. We got all terms and their GUIDs. We wrote a console application to search each term GUID programmatically and if result count is > 0, then the term is used. else it is unused. the property "Trim duplicates" was set to false.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Cameron,

Thanks. I checked the link. But as I have mentioned it loops through all lists in all site collections to get fields mapped to term sets. Since we have around 8k site collections in tenant, I wanted to know if there is any other simpler way to get this information.

    Thanks
