System.PrivateProfileString Word VBA not returning proper values since 12130.20272 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

    Since version 12130.20272 of Microsoft Word update we have found that some legacy VBA macro code we are using is not working properly.  We found the problem is with System.PrivateProfileString VBA command when reading DWORD value in registry.

    Here is a simple VBA example:

    key = System.PrivateProfileString("", "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Microsoft Outlook", "MSIInstallOnWTS")
    MsgBox key

    In the past, it would return the proper value contained in the registry (even for DWORD) as a string.  Now it is not returning the proper value unless the value is 0.   For example, if the DWORD value is 541, it would return g541.   It all cases other than a value of 0 (zero) it will return a garbage character in front of the result.

    Prior versions of  Word with 12130.20272 do not have this problem.

  • just to update this was found to be a problem with Microsoft Word and was confirmed by Microsoft.  Microsoft has corrected the problem with an update to Word (March 2020?)
