Azure SQL Database Lost connection and then High CPU usage

  • At 12:30am last night our production SQL database on Azure lost connection for 4 minutes.

When connection came back the queries that we normally run and are very low cpu usage and quick, were suddenly slow and taking a lot of CPU usage.

This caused all the queries to timeout.  We don't have a support contract and the database looked 'good' to Azure's checker.

In order to fix the issue for now and get our software working again, I moved the database to the next Higher DTU which is now costing us more money.

Other than paying Microsoft more money for the same database that was running just fine the day before, what could I do to correct this issue.

If this had been a local SQL Server, I think my dba's would have restarted the server. I didn't see a way to do that in Azure.
