Recording from webcam at constant frame rate RRS feed

  • Question

  • How can I record from webcam (Logitech C920) at constant frame rate?

I notice there is very high CPU usage with media foundation. With Logitech recording software, I can record 1080P at constant frame rate and the CPU usage is very low. I realize it probably uses x264 which is a much better encoder than the one provided by media foundation.

Is there a way I can at least record at constant frame rate?

  • As far as I remember, C920 is capable to produce already compressed H.264. Supposedly, Logitech software captures H.264 and there is no CPU load of software compression, frames are not delayed by software encoder.

Ability to capture H.264 with C920 camera depends on combination of OS and camera driver. A rule of thumb is that you would prefer to uninstall Logitech driver and use generic from Microsoft.
