  • No. An Azure Vnet gateway type cannot be changed from route-based to policy-based or the other way. The gateway must be deleted and recreated, a process taking around 60 minutes. The IP address of the gateway will not be preserved nor will the Pre-Shared Key (PSK).

Refer to this link for step by step guide on creating new VPN gateway.

  • Two questions please...

    1. Is there a way to backup and restore the current VPN configuration in Azure? Let's say the new VPN tunnel fails to establish the connection...is there a way to roll back to the old configuration?

    2. I was told the VPN setup involved some legacy components that are no longer present in Azure. My main concern is that we decide to recreate the Virtual network gateway and when it get re-created we might run into some kind of conflicts.

Any help and suggestions are appreciated?

  • No, you can’t backup or restore Azure VPN configuration however you can reset Azure VPN Gateway.

A VPN gateway connection relies on multiple resources that are configured with specific settings. Most of the resources can be configured separately, although some resources must be configured in a certain order. Refer to this link for more detailed information and step by step guide.
