Mobile controls or directly draw WML pages? RRS feed

Before the mobile controls (and asp.net), I created mobile asp pages by sending out the WML markup, sending the right content-type headers and replacing variables(and got variables thru Request.Query) plus other techniques. My question is ... Dont we have alot more control over our mobile applications if we create one project for WML 1.1-1.2 devices, and another for pocket IE instead of using "device specific" alternatives? I like the way i did things before, yet it doesnt seem right to just skip the mobile controls. Dont get me wrong i like writing the code once, and having it display across browsers, but I want a simple WML site and a flashy mobile site (within the bandwidth restraints). It seems like it becomes more difficult to juggle both on a single form. Plus wouldnt this remove any overhead from our WML application? Maybe I should read more about this, but so far it looks like a better alternative.
