Recommend book(s) regarding Workflows in SP RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I'm going to be implementing workflows at my organization and I need to be able to perform certain actions (like sending an email) if eg. a manager has not done some action within 5 days.

Also, I'm new to SP Workflows and Workflows Foundation in general. However, I've been developing with SP2007 for a few years, so I'm used to working with VS.

Can you recommend any good books for me? Specifically I have a task comming up soon where I need to create workflows for an SP list of Infopath forms, so it would be great to also get the angle on Infopath forms and how they can relate to workflows in SP.

  • I think one of the best coverages of Workflow is David Mann's book titled "Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System".

  • I agree with the recommendation.

But if you want to look at what other WF books are out for SP 2007 check my book list of SP 2007 books here

    http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/Lists/v3%20WSS%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx

Workflow is Group J - but watch out, several of those listed are for WWF and not specifically for SP 2007 + WF.

The book extracts page of free on-line chapters http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/Lists/v3%20WSS%20FAQ/VII%20Book%20Extracts.aspx has 4 wf books listed (whether or not the links to those on-line chapters still work is a question - they did when they were added but it's quite a few years ago)

Later: One of the WF books listed on the on-line chapter page is in fact the book Paul recommended. The link was no longer valid (I will amend it) but I found the latest location for Chapter One of that book by going to

    http://www.apress.com/9781590597002

moving down the page and selecting "download now",

That's a zip file. The first PDF file in it is the list of contents + acknolwledgements etc. but the second PDF file is chapter one of the book. Check it to see if you like the style.

SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx
WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx
Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters
