can't get simulator to work RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I recently discovered robotic developers studio and I'd really like to get started with it. I installed all the necessary programs and RDS 4 beta. But I can't get the simulator to work. I followed the instructions on http://msdn.microsoft.com/de-de/library/dd939184.aspx, but always when I try to run it, only the log-window appears, without any error-messages (except for one about font 'arial'). As far as I understand, the simulator-window should just pop up, is that right? I also tried to run some examples, but again, no simulator. Also when I start the examples using Visual C# 2010 express edition, only the empty dashboard appears.

I'm using RDS 4 beta on Windows 7, 64 bit (could this cause the problem?)

    thank you in advance!

  • Hi,

I think this must be related to some wrong references/extensions in the project.

In VS, just take the properties of the project and move through all the tabs on the left hand side (Debug, signing e.t.c). Make sure that the link to xml file is correct in the Debug tab. Also in the signing tab add the mrisamples.snk link that resides inside the Microsoft Robotics Studio/Samples folder. Likewise double check all the tabs.

    cheers!!

    Omair.

  • In addition to that.. since you are using Windows 7, 64 bit, in the Debug tab add the link to DssHost32.exe that resides inside Microsoft robotics Studio/bin folder..

    cheers!!

    Omair.

  • hi,

thank you for your answer! I checked all the tabs, and everything looks ok. In the debug-tab, there are only to options. One is the command line argument (currently set to -p:50000 -t:50001 -m:"samples\config\SimpleSimulatedRobot.user.manifest.xml" since I'm using the SimpleSimulatedRobot example) and the other one is the working directory. But there is no option to add the link to DssHost32.exe. The link to mrisamples.snk was already set in the signing tab.

PS: Why has my question been reported as abusive? Did I write anything wrong?

  • Hi,

In the debug tab, under 'start external program', you have to add the link to DssHost32.exe.. I am using VS-2010 and there is an option out there..

I don't know about your question being flaged as abusive..

  • I'm using the express edition, so maybe it doesn't support this option. There are only those two options I mentioned before.

Oh, the abusive-flag is gone again...

  • well somehow you have to change the link-to DssHost.exe to DssHost32.exe for 64 bit Windows, otherwise simulator is not going to work.. just try to find out the start external program option..

  • just found out that it is starting DssHost32.exe by default, so no need to change this.

    but it still doesn't work...

  • Please try the following:

    From the Start Menu, select:

    • Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio 4 Beta
    • Visual Simulation Environment 4 Beta
    • Reference Platform 2011

This should start the simulator. If it does not start, please explain what happens.

Did you perhaps say "no" to the Firewall request when you first ran a simulation? That will prevent DssHost from running properly. You will have to look in the Windows Firewall settings to change this.

    Trevor

P.S. I don't know why your post was flagged as abusive. It looks like it was done by an automated system - it was not one of the Robotics team members.

  • sorry that it took so long. when I start "referenze platform 2011", a console window appears saying that some services were started. Then a couple of minutes nothing happens until a lot of error-messages appear, mostly timouts and some saying "failed setting partners for service". But the simulator still doesn't start.

And no, I didn't say "no" to the firewall request. I even tried to disable it completely, but with the same result...

  • Can you confirm that DirectX 9.0c and XNA 4.0 are installed properly? I suspect that the simulator is not starting.

I don't think it will make any difference, but have you tried any of the other simulations?

Also, it would help if you could post the error messages that you are seeing.

I'll try to reinstall the whole rds this weekend, maybe this helps...

  • What if you run any of the other simulations under the Visual Simulation Environment folder in the Start menu?

These error messages just tell me that the services failed to start, but not why.
