Visual Studio Installer Error - Installation (for updates) Failed

    Question

  • When I opened up my VS Community 2017 just now, I saw there's an update.   When I tried it, though, I got an error after while that said that the installer had failed. I have the logs. Could someone tell me to collect them so I can post them here? Thanks.

  • Hi DragonOsman2,

    Welcome to MSDN forum.

Please go to here: https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/ to re-download the installer of visual studio 2017 and then run it to update your visual studio. Meanwhile, disable any anti-virus and run the installer as administrator.

If the issue persists, providing the error message and use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip under %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

    Best regards,

    Joyce

  • Thanks for the reply.

I tried turning off Windows Defender's Real-time Protection and tried to run the installer again, but it still failed.  Please tell me how to post the logs here.  I'll just do that.

Edit: It still didn't work so far.  I have one more idea in mind using the above advice.  I'll ask here again if even that doesn't work.

Edit: Okay, now I officially give up.  It still didn't work.  Here's the error log.

  • I clicked on "Update" after doing the Repair, but it still didn't work.  I still get the same "Installer update failed to download" error.  Here's the link for the vslogs.

Any help would be appreciated (as long as it helps fix my problem).

  • Hi DragonOsman2,

From you description, there are two aspects could affect this, your OS environment or your installer update got problem.

Firstly please have a try with running the VS installer > Modify to check if you could install any component, if it stills fails, I suggest you uninstall VS 2017 which is broken from Control Panel, at the same time, please go to the folder:

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio and delete the ‘Packages’ folder and ‘Setup’ folder if there has.

(normally under %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Visual Studio) and delete the folder ‘2017’

Then ensure all the Windows update to the newest, reboot your computer, download a VS installer from Microsoft website and run it as administrator to perform a new installation.

    Best Regards,

  • It seems like I can do a modification installation.  It's just the 15.0.26228.12 (if that's the correct number (I typed it from memory)) update that keeps failing no matter what I do.  [I cancelled it because I don't really want to modify anything).

Have you looked at the logs I posted?  I'm posting a link to the logs again.  vslogs

  • Hi,

I have checked your log, did you delete any folder about visual studio 2017 before?

Please make your widows up-to-date. What error message did you get when you click update?

    Best regards,

    Joyce
