File encryption for windows end user RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to create an archive (.zip) and password protect it so unauthorized users cannot see the content of the .zip.  I figured I would just create the .zip and then add encryption and a password, but this would require the end user to have my application to run the decryption.

I understand there is a registry setting that can add encryption/decryption functionality to windows.  Something like this...

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

In the right-hand pane, create a new 32-bit DWORD value called EncryptionContextMenu and give it a value of 1.

Can I take advantage of this someway and provide encryption that can be decrypted later using simple windows tools?  I'm using c# and .net.  Any ideas would be helpful.
