compact 7 offline update RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Does anybody knows, from where it' is possible to download the updates for compact 7.

I can download in MSDN update 1 and update 3 as a iso CD image, but the others updates are only as online update Files available, they do updates over internet. The WEDU tool need also a internet connection.

    under stands:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/develop/windows-embedded-compact-7-developer-update.aspx#3

    3. If I don’t use WEDU, where can I get updates?

Updates for Windows Embedded Compact 7 have been and will continue to be available from a variety of sources dependent on your license.

This mean it's possible but i not found something.

I have MSDN Embedded-Subscription, this should be right ?

But i can't find offline updates.

    Please suggest.

     Awaiting your reply.

     Thanks

  • If you get access to ECE (ask your Microsoft distributor) you can download most of the updates as full .img (sort of iso) images. I just spoke with someone within MS and apparently they are working on making updates available as full download so you can install them offline. It is coming, but for now you'll have to do with what I describe on my blog or get access to ECE.

  • Hey everyone,

We are still working on a way to enable offline layouts for our customers. We do expected a release of this functionality shortly. We hope by this coming update release or the next. This functionality will enable you to download the content you want and have it for later you. It also allows you to download content without installing it.

    Thanks,

  • Like the description under

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/A/D/2ADAC5E4-2511-45B8-819C-66987A0AE5CB/Windows%20Embedded%20Compact%207_M12_2011.htm

    i can see a Fix

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2643054

    and there by

Files that are included in this update package

    stand all the updated Files.

This not mean i want do it all by Hand, but a easy way to do this for an installation

    witout internet should be possible.

  • In the Blog from Brian Rogers is something described but not compleetly finish.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/icumove/archive/2011/07/27/updating-windows-embedded-compact-7.aspx

    It stand like

Second, you will need to get the update content and place it in a central location for your machines to access it. We call this the layout of the installation bits. If you place the layout on a network share you should be able to copy the original RTM release out to that location from disk. Next, for every release you just copy all contents over the RTM layout

but it not stand from where to download the update contents.

I hope someone has a idea for that.

Or someone also do installation offline.

like with QFE and rollups (CE 5.0).

  • I had the same problems and I have been able to reconstruct the files for update 2 (July 2011 update). I will write a blog post about how to do this. I'll post here again once it is online.

Thanks for that tip. I was also try something with the PkgCache Files.

I will it do with your way, but i hope Microsoft will give us this Files direct or someone know where they are

    to download.

To do this way every month by hand, it's very time-consuming.

    Thanks

Ok, you sure with ECE i get all of them or only most ?

So i will see what's happen with ours  ECE license, i mean she is expired and we have to refresh.

Otherwise i can leave with WEDU for short time and wait for Microsoft.

I mean it's should be also included in MSDN-Embedded in future.

    Thanks anyway.

  • You get all the updates on ECE and most of them are full. So far only the July 2011 (Update 2) one was not full.

  • Great Brian, thank you for responding in the forums.

Will you look at the WEDU bug as well? Many people can't get through the registration pages, it's an endless loop always returning at the first page of the registration.

  • This issue has been resolved with the latest update from Windows Embedded Compact 7 release. The new feature is called "Offline Layout". You can learn more about it here: http://krakllc.wordpress.com/2012/02/14/offline-layout-for-windows-embedded-compact-7/

    Thanks

  • Very disapointed in the whole update process. Very unstable.

It broke my install and I can not recover.

I can not even reinstall or uninstall! All i get is this "an error occurred that prevented the installation of WEC from finishing"

Restarting I get the "last action of ..installer was not completed and will resume" then same error again ...endless loop!

Does anyone know how to fix?

  • I've got the same here. Last update failed and there's simply no way I can get WEDU to even recognize there is an update available...

    <rant>

Offline Layout sucks ar#@, especially because there does not seem to be a way to change where it stores it. Who came up with the idea to put something you want to RETAIN in a TEMPORARY folder? Temporary insanity?!

I'm just doing a complete new WEC7 installation (which should be finished in about a week, ugh!) and will update here if I find a way to get offline layout to store the updates somewhere else.

It's just crazy that these updates have to take soooo long to install, even if you have everything local. What does the installation process do that takes so long? I'm running the installs on a Win7 x86 machine with 8GB and a Vertex4 512GB SSD (one of the fastest available SSD at the moment), so it can't really be my system?

Oh, how I long back to CE 4.2/5/6 QFE's... They were never perfect, but at least manageable (and source controllable)!

    </rant>
