Create Server Role unavailable? Server 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to follow the documentation here regarding creating a server role. When I try the T/SQL script:

    use master
    create server role [kevintest]
    go

I get a Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 2  Incorrect syntax near [kevintest].

When I try the SQL Server Management Studio option (Server-> Security -> Server Roles, right click, I do not see a menu choice for New Server Role.

I'm looking at Server Management Studio version 11.0.2100.60, connecting to a server Version 10.50.1600.1 of 64-bit SQL Server Standard Edition.

What gives? Is creation of new server roles disabled by some installation/configuration option?

  • It seems like while your SSMS is version 11 (SQL Server 2012), your SQL Server is actually version 10.50 (SQL Server 2008 R2).

Server-scoped roles were introduced on SQL Server 2012, they are not supported in SQL Server 2008R2.

    I hope this helps,
