upgrade 2008 r2 express sp2 to 2008 r2 standard

    Question

  • hi there,

We have hit the size limit on sql 2008 r2 express and need to change the edition to standard.

Problem I have is that we are currently running 2008 r2 express SP2 whereas I can only find an ISO for 2008 r2 standard (no SP).

Is it ok to use edition upgrade option from this media?

    Thanks for any advice

  • Hi Alg,

The edition upgrade path is supported, talk a look here for more information: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(v=sql.105).aspx.

The process for upgrading the edition can be found here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc707783(v=sql.105).aspx. You will need the Product Key, which can be found in the ISO. Search for a file called DefaultSetup.ini.

Upgrading the edition does not install any new features, and is a pretty quick process as it only updates some keys in the registry. You may need to stop and restart any services for the new edition to be recognized.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  • Thanks Jeff

Just wanted to confirm that it doesn't matter the upgrade edition is 2008r2 with no SP and the install product is sp2?

  • Not for upgrading the edition. If you later install any additional features that were not available in the Express Edition then you'd want to re-apply SP2 afterwards.
