Compact 7 won't detect VS2008 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  •

Sorry if I seem a little ticked, I've just spent the past few hours downloading and installing VS2008 & SP1 / more than 8GBs worth of compact 7.

When I go into the 7 installer, it says it can't find Sp1 when I have it installed.

    VS editions I have installed:

    • 2010 SP1
    • 2008 SP1
    • 2005 (for Xbox XDK)

I can't remove any of the editions and redownload them, as I am on vacation (no wifi and I have to use a Verizon 5GB data connection). Is there any fix? Edit INI files?

As you're reading this already, why am I getting these errors still?

    Creating an MFC app:

    • "new.h" is not a &F&&^% valid file

Creating a .NET Windows Forms app:

    • "oldnames.lib" is not found, or something like that
Also, is it possible to extract the ISO's of the 7 setup and install them via the setup.exe file?

  • Despite whatever you may have heard; it's best to not install all those
VS editions on the same machine, especially not if you throw Windows
    CE/Embedded Compact into the mix.

Use a VM installed with Windows XP 32 bit for each version of VS, at
least use a VM for any Windows CE/Embedded Compact development
environment. I've been doing that for years now and never have any
problems (apart from disk space problems in the past, but with price/GB
being so unbelievably low nowadays this is the optimum solution).

  • I've been successful with VS2005 and 2008 on the same machine for CE work, but you MUST install 2005 and any service packs first, then 2008 and any service packs.  As Michel says, the best fix is to not do that at all, if you can avoid it.
