There's nothing that stands out in the w3c log snippet as a request that might cause the issue you're seeing.

The best thing would probably be to just attach a debugger prior to the crash, and then create a crash dump file when the issue reproes.  Just do a ".dump /ma crash.dmp" in the debugger, and post a link to the file.

    Thanks,

    jack

    Bharani -

Thanks for taking the time to try out our bitrate throttling module.  I'm sorry that the experience hasn't been smother - I'll do my best to help.

It looks like there may be two separate issues here.  First, there seems to be a divide-by-zero problem somewhere in bitrate throttling that is causing the crash you describe.  Second, there is a managed ArgumentNullException in IIS manager, which to the best of my understanding is not related to bitrate throttling.

In order to narrow down the cause of the bitrate throttling crash it would be helpful to know how it is configured.  Can you possibly post the relevant snippets of applicationHost.config or web.config that contain the BRT config?  It would also help tremendously to know which requests were happening around the time of the crash.  The specific file that triggered the issue may or may not be in the the w3c log, depending on when the crash happened.

If you do happen to know which media file is causing the issue, can you provide a link to it?  My hunch is that there is a corrupt media file or unexpected file contents that are causing the crash.

Hopefully some more diagnostic info (netsniff, config, crash dump and media file) will help us to pinpoint the root cause of the crash.

    Thanks,

    Jack

    Hi Jack,

i have added .3gp to the existing media list of bit rate throttler. Here are the values for the same.

Type: Data, Fast start: 50 KB, Throttle Rate: 300 kbps.

    1) please tell me from where i can take the logs you are asking me?

    2) what info you want me to provide from web.config?

    Bharani -

The logging I am referring to is just the W3C style logs that IIS generates for each request.  You will need to turn on logging (instructions can be found at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754631(WS.10).aspx), and that will hopefully identify the request that caused the failure.  The log files are typically created under inetpub\logs\LogFiles\W3SVC1.  Are there any media files that are being requested around the time of the crash?  I wouldn't expect the data throttling rule you described to cause any issue since the throttle rate is specified explicitly and the file need not be opened or parsed.

The config information that would be helpful may exist in applicationHost.config or in web.config depending on how you have set up and configured bitrate throttling.  Look for "bitrateThrottling" in either file.

Also, if there is any way you could attach a debugger to the w3wp process prior to the crash and capture a crash dump, that would be immensely helpful (you can download Microsoft debuggers from http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/Devtools/Debugging/default.mspx).

I'm having this same problem on a SharePoint 2010 web application on Windows Server 2008 R2. I've documented it on TechNet but no ideas over there just yet.

I've recently been trying to get the Bit Rate Throttling IIS.NET module to work with my SharePoint 2010 web application. It was working briefly for me in the past, but I've tried enabling it in three different environments recently and in each case the w3wp process for the SharePoint 2010 web application crashes as soon as I hit a page. It will serve a page or two once the w3wp starts up and then it will crash again. I've seen this problem mentioned on the IIS.NET forums but I've not seen any possible solutions. I'm posting the issue here since this could be an issue specific to SharePoint 2010 web applications.

This is a WCM site with Output, Object and BLOB caching all enabled. Note that the problem occurs before I access any content that would be throttled by the module. These are the tests I've run:

Test 1: BLOB Cache off, Bit Rate Throttling installed but disabled
    Works fine.

Test 2: BLOB Cache on, Bit Rate Throttling installed but disabled
    Works fine.

As I say, I've tried this in three SharePoint 2010 environments, from single-server w/local SQL to a four server farm + SQL. Each SharePoint server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 R2. I've also tried it in two different domains/forests. The only thing that looks remotely interesting to me is that the module is version 7.1.xxx and I'm using IIS 7.5, but the IIS.NET site suggests that it works with IIS 7.x.
At one point I believe I fixed it by enabling/disabling BLOB caching (thus steps 4-6) but I've been unable to repeat that fix. Any ideas?
I've tried to debug the crash with Visual Studio 2010, but I don't really know what I'm doing at that point. Not my forte. Any ideas?

    Tristan -

I'm very sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having with Bit Rate Throttling.  I don't have a repro of this problem locally, so it would be tremendously helpful if you could save off a crash dump and then send me (privately) a link to the file.  I am more than happy to help get to the bottom of this issue, I just need some more diagnostic information to investigate further.

There's a blog post on msdn (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/johan/archive/2007/01/11/how-to-install-windbg-and-get-your-first-memory-dump.aspx) which goes into some detail on the debugging tools (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx), but pretty much all that's needed is tlist and windbg. What would be really helpful is a minidump of the w3wp.exe process at the time when the AV occurs, which can be captured by doing the following:

    1) Make sure the worker process that services the web site is up and running (typically just browse to the site's root http://mysite.com)

    2) Find the w3wp process that has bitrate throttling loaded:

     C:\inetpub\wwwroot>tlist -m bitratemodule.dll
     C:\Program Files\IIS\Media\bitratemodule.dll - 3928 w3wp.exe

     3) Attach the debugger (windbg) to that process:

    windbg -p 3928

    4) In the "Command" window of windbg, issue the following command to configure the break status for access violations to break on the first chance

    sxe av

    5) In the "Command" window of windbg,  type "g" <Enter> to let the process continue to execute

    6) Navigate to the web page or Sharepoint page that causes the AV

    7) This should cause the debugger to break, at which point you can save off a crash dump of the current process by issuing the following command in the "Command" window of windbg (note the period that precedes the dump command)

    .dump /ma W3WP_CrashDump.dmp

If you can send me a link (privately of course) to the crash dump file I will be happy to take a look!

    Thanks,

    jack

Thanks for your post - I believe we have identified the problem and have a fix for the issue.  The fix will be available as part of IIS Media Services 4.0 which will be released in the very near future.

    Thanks,

    jack

IIS Media Services 4.0 was released yesterday, including an updated Bit Rate Throttling binary which should hopefully address the issue described above.

Please check out http://www.iis.net/download/BitRateThrottling and let us know if the 4.0 binaries work for you!

     Thanks,

I m running into the identical problem... I am using Windows Server 2008 R2... I've attempted to install the Media services to handle Live Smooth Streaming applications on the server however, my web server suddenly develops 500 Internal Server errors... it just crashed again...

I beleive I have isolated the issue on Server 2008 R2 (64 bit). It seems some clients issue a 'head' request when accessing the binary (mp3) instead of a 'get'. This causes a divde by 0 error in bitratemodule.dll.

Here's the log entry of an offending iPhone:

    2013-10-12 15:43:58 10.8.4.222 HEAD /podcasts/media/roots-wbls-01-13-2012.mp3 - 80 - 217.200.201.50 iTunes-iPhone/6.1.4+(6;+32GB;+dt:82) 200 0 0 10114

A temporary fix I did was to remove the 'HEAD' verb from being used on the website using the Request Filtering settings. To set:

    1. Select the website
    2. Double Click on the 'Request Filtering' icon
    3. Naviagate to the [HTTP verbs] tab
    4. Select the 'Deny verb' link
    5. Enter 'HEAD' and hit [ok]

I have further info on the w3wp.exe/bitrate.dll crash. It seem the divide by zero error is happening on files that contain a PNG image in the ID3 tag. JPG's work fine but PNG give the divide by zero error in the ID3 tag as a cover.

Please fix this in successive releases!

    Thanks! Laughing
