[Question] Hyper-V Reference point creation and RCT RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm writing a code for backup based on RCT.

I've found that a reference point should be created for the RCT-based incremental backup.

However, when I tried to create reference points, I failed in creation of .rct files.

I've tried to create a reference point using the CreateReferencePoint method of

the Msvm_VirtualSystemReferecenPointService class with the input parameter:

    inParams["ReferencePointType"] = 1; // RCT based

But, it did not create .rct file. Instead, a .hrl(Hyper-V Replication Log) file was created.

I've tried the other parameters, such as 0 (Log base) and 2 (Not in the reference manual).

The results were "Error code 32773", which looks "Invalid Parameters."

Please kindly advise me for the troubleshooting.

    Thank you in Advance.

    Min-Joon Kim.

  • Hi Min-Joon Kim,

    Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I have two questions to confirm with you.

What the type of your application? Could you provide some related code here?

Besides, I find the creation of .rct files in C++ document.

To create and use a resource template

We are waiting for your update.

  • Hello, Xingyu Zhao.

I'm working on Hyper-V backup solutions.

RCT stands for "Resilient Change Tracking" for incremental backup,

    not related with resource template.

    Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Min-Joon Kim.

  • Hi Min-Joon Kim,

    Thanks for your feedback.

    Apologize for my misunderstanding.

Here's a reference related to Resilient Change Tracking.

Microsoft Brings Resilient Change Tracking (RCT) in Windows Server 2016

Besides, I find that you ask the same question in Hyper-V forum, and hope the suggestions there can help you.

If you have more questions about the code, I suggest you provide some related code here, and it will help us to analyze your problem.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best Regards,

    Xingyu Zhao

  • Thank you, Xingyu Zhao.

By the way, I think it's a kind of bug or lack of information at the reference manual page.

    Best regards,

    Min-Joon Kim.
