win32 Directory notifications with mapped network drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am using win32 functions for directory change notification like,

    FindFirstChangeNotification
    FindNextChangeNotification
    FindCloseChangeNotification

For local directories on my PC it is working perfectly and im getting correct notifications when a file is added or deleted from the specified directory on my PC. However, when I used the function FindFirstChangeNotification() to get a handle from a mapped network drive, it returns an invalid handle. Do you have any idea if this function works with mapped network drives or not. Or is there any other way of getting directory change notification that works with mapped network drives also? I will appreciate if u please help me in this regard.

    Thanks

    regards,
    Tariq.

  • The documentation for FindFirstChangeNotification indicates that notifications may not be returned for a remote file system.  Indeed, if the remote file system doesn't provide a mechanism to push change notifications, then it's impossible to detect changes without polling all the time (which is expensive in a high latency scenario).
