Encountered an improper argument when start new Workflow RRS feed

  • Question

  • After starting new workflow in SP Designer 2013 with platform type 'Sharepoint 2013 Workflow', I always get an error: encountered an improper argument.

    What could it be?

  • Hello, could you present the full text of the error from SharePoint Designer? Does this appear in the browser or within SPD?

If that's not sufficient could you provide more background to your environment? Are you testing SharePoint 2013 on a local server? Do you have the details on which versions of SharePoint 2013 and the Workflow Manager you currently have installed (down to the build)?

    Thanks, -Tim

  • Dear Tim,

I am having a similar error appearing when trying to create a site workflow using "Workflow 2013- Project Server" platform. It does not occur when choosing Workflow 2010. To answer your questions:

Configuration: Standalone Server setup in a test environment.

  • Hello Ayman,

Thanks for the additional details. Can you confirm that you installed the latest versions of SharePoint 2013, SharePoint Designer 2013, and the Workflow Manager as outlined in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj163276.aspx? It's possible that one component is at an older version which may generate incompatible Workflow Xaml files. If you could provide the versions of each installed component, that would also help.

    Thanks,
    -Tim
