What causes SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to invoke CA's Erwin automatically.

    Question

  • I am trying to determine why SSMS automatically the invokes windows installer for Erwin on the 1st select top 1000 rows or sql file open.  If I open SSMS, then select the top 1000 rows from a table, it hangs, starts a windows installer window to configure Erwin Data Modeler r9.5, then fails on space.

    I reviewed the following:

    1. In SSMS the source control Plug-in Selection option is set to None.
    2. I searched all the SQL Server registry keys there is no addin for Erwin under SQLServer software registry keys.
    3. There is an ERwinSpy_AddIN under an installer registry key, not sure what this is or if it’s a factor.
    4. I checked the Windows & default file associations and .sql is correctly set to SQL Server Management Studio

If I cancel the installer/Erwin configuration that was invoked, SSMS behaves normally until it's closed and re-open.  The issue repeats itself every time SSMS is started on the 1st query open or select  top 1000 rows from a table.

If anyone knows what connects actions within SSMS to invoke 3rd party software and how I can stop this? please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Tony C

  • It was resolved when I upgrade SSMS to the latest version 17.4.  CA was not helpful but the management studio upgrade did resolve this issue.  I was on the SSMS from SQL Server 2014 when the problem occurred.

  • Check the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\140\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\Extensions folder

  • Hi Erik,

I forgot to mention this is SQL Server version 2014.  I searched all of c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server for extensions.  I see an Applications dir with DLLs but none seem Erwin related:

  • Hi Tony,

Based on my past experience, it’s likely the issue is more related to the plugin itself, not SSMS. As it’s a third-party plugin, I would suggest you contact Erwin, Inc for more professional support in a more efficient manner.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    Regards,

  • Thanks Hannah, but I am already working with CA support with no solution so far.  I was hoping someone with knowledge of SSMS would know how to pinpoint exactly what integrates the 3rd party product.  I've been going through the registry and all the options in SSMS.

  • As Hannah said it's 3rd plugin, I suggest you remove it and repair SSMS, to see whether it's an issue with SSMS.

  • Has this been resolved?  If so, what was the solution.  I have the same issue.

    thanks
