500 - Internal Server Error(s) during load test

    Question

  • I am doing a web load test using VSTS 2008 SP1 and is running the test for 5hrs. Towards the end of the test, there are huge number of HTTP 500 errors. These errors occur only in the last 15-30mins of load test. It all works fine, if I try to access the same URL or item outside of Loadtest.

This happens only when I make the virtual user load to 1500. With user loads of 500 & 1000, this does not happen. What could be causing this?

  • Hello,

In the last 15-30 minutes period you mentioned above, could you please verify whether you can access the requests which come with errors?

You can also refer to the following article to see if you can find something helpful:

  • I can access the URLs in  failed requests outside of load test.

  • BTW, there are a few web tests that don't do anything great but just access a site URL. For example, http://MyWebFarm/

This particular test passes all the way until last 15mins and then fails. Again, in the last 15mins of loas test, this failing webtest gets called for many number of times but only 3-5 such requests fail and not all.

  • Hello,

For better understanding, "In the last 15-30 minutes period you mentioned above, could you please verify whether you can access the requests which come with errors?" I mean manually access the url while load test is still running in the last 15-30 minutes. Could you please confirm it?

In addition, does this load test only contain one web test or more than one? Do the failed tests have run successfully before in the load test? Here is a blog you can have a look to see if you can find anything helpful: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/slumley/archive/2007/11/19/debugging-errors-in-load-test.aspx

There is also a new feature named 'saving test logs' in VS2010 which captures and saves the entire result of individual tests run within the load test such as a failed Web test or a failed unit test.   This feature makes it easier to debug problems that occur when running tests within a load test that do not occur when running the same tests outside the context of a load test. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/billbar/archive/2009/06/09/vsts-2010-load-test-feature-saving-test-logs.aspx

Yes, I can access the URL manually.

There are more than 10 web tests in the load test. Like I mentioned, all these web tests pass until last 15-30mins of load test. Unfortunately, I dont have access to VS2010 yet. I would love to explore more debugging options.

    Thanks for your response

  • Hello,

Have you ever taken a look at the blog I mentioned above to see if they help.?http://blogs.msdn.com/b/slumley/archive/2007/11/19/debugging-errors-in-load-test.aspx.

In addiiton, if you go to the Error table in load test result table window, click the number under 'Failed' column, could you please verify the error messages to see if you can find the root cause. If you set the load test consist of only one web test, could you find more information?

I doubt this may result from that the server finds that too many requests from one place too frequently and reject the requests. You could contact the server administrator to see if they have configured something like this.

Here is an article offers debug technique you can take a look: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/edglas/archive/2007/12/02/web-test-authoring-and-debugging-techniques-for-vs-2008.aspx
