sql server 2000 and 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • so am gone transfer database from 2000 to 2008

    SO what's better:

1.To take database offline , copy all database and than attach on sql 2008

2.To make backup of all database , create new database with same name , and than restore backup from every database?

Which one is safer and better ?

  • Hi Zzdravkin,

The Statistics collection and usage is very different from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server2008. Once you attached a database to SQL Server 2008, it is upgraded internally, and you can't attach it back to SQL Server 2000.

So if you want to use detach/attach to migrate, keep a backup of your databases available for fail back in the event of problems advanced. Please make backup of all database first, which is much safer and better.

Moreover, it’s easier for you to use DTS Package Migration Wizard to migrate Data Transformation Services (DTS) packages to the SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) format.

More information, please refer to these two articles:
    1. Considerations for Upgrading Data Transformation Services
    2. Migrating Data Transformation Services Packages

There is a thread about migration from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005/2008 topic, please refer Jonathan Kehayias’s reply:http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldatabaseengine/thread/c5d703a5-27bc-4527-aa22-8e5e0d660652/
