  • You can manage hyper-v from Server 2008 R2 to Windows 8 (but none of the new options will be available), but not from Windows 8 to Server 2008 R2. There is not currently a way to manage Windows hyper-v 2 from hyper-v 3 at least not available to the general public. I hope MS has this worked out by RTM.

  • hi there,

i guess we'll have to wait for a windows8-compatible RSAT version for all the remote management stack.

until then a VM with windows7SP1 + RSAT did the trick for me...

    best regards,

    Pierre.

  • I ran across the same problem when I wished to test the Hyper-V environment in the Developer Preview.  Here are my observations:

On the machine that has the Preview installed:

    • Hyper-V Manager behaves as expected when managing local VMs
    • Hyper-V Manager cannot manage VMs on Microsft Hyper-V 2008 or Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V installed.  As per Monostatos comments above.

In my case, I have several physical Hyper-V servers.  They are used for development and testing.  I wanted to add the Preview machine into my pool of resources.  I ran across this error when trying to access the VMs created on the Preview installed machine.

This can get a little tricky depending if you are running within an active directory domain and haven't joined the Preview machine to the domain or if you are running within a workgroup. Check out http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee256062(WS.10).aspx.  The information still applies here.

One last comment, I was a bit surprised that the Hyper-V Manager 3 could not manage Hyper-V 2 systems.  I would have expected the reverse to be true :)
