  • What version of SQL Server?

In SQL Server 2008 Enterprsie Edition backup compression is already avaialble as  built-in feature

for other vesion of SQL you will have to use some third partly software.

  • What kind of compression ratio you are looking to implement?
What are the issues with the current backup sizes?

Please note that (as per BOL) Creating compressed backups is supported only in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise and later, but beginning in SQL Server 2008, every edition can restore a compressed backup.

  • Hi Satya and C_Shah,

Thank you for your replies. I was just interested in any compression for the SQL Server backups. I have read about SQL Server 2008 and Built in compression.

  • Well, LiteSpeed is the prior-to-SQL-2008's-builtin-compression standard.

    7-Zip is a fav for non-critical dbs.
I have about 1,000 video tutorials on SQL Server 2008, 2005, and 2000 over at http://www.learnitfirst.com/Database-Professionals.aspx
