  • This might be quite complicated. Azure Stack requires a fixed size .VHD format, just like Azure does. VMware VMs tend to be .VMDK or another file format.

There are conversion tools you can use to adjust the format, but they are not always successful and can have issues. Your other option is to use Azure Site Recovery to migrate the VMs from VMWare to Azure, then migrate from Azure to Azure Stack.

When you have the disks in the fixed size .VHD format, you can bring them over to Azure Stack by creating VMs wiht a custom image. You can do this with a template, or with Azure PowerShell.

There are other 3rd party tools that might also work, such as carbonite

  • Hello !

We tested the use of CommVault, as a 3rd party tool, to migrate VMs from VMWare to Azure Stack.

CommVault would take a backup of a VM in VMWare, and then will propose you to restore to Azure Stack, if you have connected CommVault to an Azure Stack instance.

During the restore to Azure Stack process, CommVault will do the work to transform the image to a VHD file, and will let you specify all details for the newly created VM on Azure Stack out of the image capture from VMWare (size of the VM, network details, ...)

This is a very practical solution to do this.

If anybody needs more details on the solution don't hesitate to reach out to me.
