Do I just edit .master fle directly when working with SPO? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I only worked with On-Prem SP2013  before.  I used to have to edit just the HTML version of the master file when customizing master file for our site, upload that and SP2013 will generate the .master file.

We're moving to SPO.  I noticed the master page HTML is hard to read or edit.  Do I just work directly with the .master file when customizing the master page file?

    Thank you.

  • You can edit the html version or .master version, both works. Once you edit the .master page then you need to continue the same path.

  • Hi,

We can edit .master file directly using SharePoint designer 2013 for SharePoint Online.

    Best Regards,

    Dennis

  • You may be able to modify the .master using the client side object model and publish it to the SPO you can use PNP (google Microsoft pnp), it is not the easiest way though.

Process of modifying the master page is similar in SharePoint online - you can edit the html and site will XML validate it and will generate the master for you then you need to activate the master.
