Options for dev environments? RRS feed

  • Hi,

    I'm new to development and I'm trying my hand at developing an iphone app that integrates with a SQL inventory database.  I see that I can download SQL Server Developer and use that, but what about Windows Server?

    I had hoped to use VMWARE to set up a server to host SQL on, but I'm not sure what my options are for an OS as I don't see a readily available development version of Windows Server.  

    I need this server to develop the web app pool on so that my iphone app has something to connect to.  It's likely that this will go nowhere, so I don't want to spend a lot of money.  What are my options?  Is there a place to sign up as a developer where a version becomes available to me?  Are there inexpensive hosted sites somewhere that I could use?

    And a slightly off topic question, if I'm going to develop a web app for SQL, should it be ASP, PHP, HTML5, or something else?

  • 'developer' licensing is tied to having an MSDN subscription.

    Otherwise you have access to 180 day evaluations, which begin behaving badly once they expire...
