New "Dev Center" library user interface sucks RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Recently the MSDN site has started morphing into this new Dev Center "experience".

And what is worse, the good old MSDN reference library has started to disappear, to be replaced by the new "Learn -> Reference" interface. Try searching for any API stuff, and the results will take you there.

The "new interface" is not very user-friendly or productive. As an example, check out the documentation for the Windows Installer Component Table:

    GOOD: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa368007%28VS.85%29.aspx  (use classic view)

    BAD: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa368007%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Can someone explain to the hot-shot design heads, that: developers might be more interested in a productive user interface for the documentation, then an "über-cool minimalistic design" look which matches with the designers living room.

  • Yeah and what's worse is that google seems to be picking up the new "dev center" style API help on most searches, or picking up Windows CE garbage.  It's extremely hard to get to the old classic view MSDN help from google.    The thin "white" look just isn't doing anything for me, sorry.
