Multiple instance in sql server RRS feed

  • Team,

      A General clarification.

      1. Am having my sql server with instance name - Venkat.
      2. Now, I need to install another instance. So that, its like my machine holds two sql server.
      3. How can i achieve it.

    If i put the sql server cd am getting repair or reinstall options. Bit confused.

    Kindly provide me some steps to achive this.

    SQL Server 2000: The following article presents how to How to install a named instance: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa197928(SQL.80).aspx


    SQL Server 2005: To install a new instance, try to run the setup.exe from the SQL Server installation media. On the component to Install, select the “SQL Server Database Services”. On the Instance Name page, select Named instance to install a new named instance.


    SQL Server 2008: When you run the setup.exe, select New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation. On the Feature Selection page, select Database Engine Services option. On the Instance Configuration, select Named instance to install a new named instance.

  • If you want to insall multiple sql server instances on single machine. There is just one default instance allowed, and other sql instances must be named instances.
