So it appears that things go bad when Setup tries to open that subkey in the registry. Really how that would come I don't know. You did run Setup logged in as administrator on the machine, didn't you? Do you have some anti-malware/firewall product running that may block access to some keys?

  • In C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Log you find the installation attempts for SQL 2014. (Change to 110 for the SQL 2012 attempts.) There is one directory per attempt. There are a lot of files here. You can start with sql_engine*.txt which is in the subdirectory with the same name as the instance. It appears that it is here things go wrong.

These logs are very verbose and by no means easy to understand. But at least you might be able to find the context where this error occurs. If you are really lucky, you may be able to draw a conclusion.

  • I appreciate that you feel like lost in the jungle by this error. But we cannot tell what the reason is from the log file you posted. I pointed you to where you can find all log files. I don't really expect you to figure out the problem by reading the log files, but if you want us to help us, you need to dig up these log files and share the contents. And it is specifically the sql_engine that is of interest. As it is likely to large, it may be better to upload it somewhere (Dropbox, Google Drive etc) than post it in verbatim here.

These errors are often due to some configuration problem on the machine you are trying to install on.

  • Can you find *details file* in the logs. The location is mentioned in below article

View and Read Setup Log Files

    Location would be

     %programfiles%\ Microsoft SQL Server\130\SetupBootstrap\Log\<yyyymmdd_hhmm>\Detail.txt.</yyyymmdd_hhmm>

Also it would be better to post the logs on shared drive and then post the link here the log is very big and it would be difficult to read if you post it here

    Cheers,

    Shashank

  • My experience is that it is not always enough to disable malware-protection programs when they conflicts with something, sometimes you need to uninstall them. Often the problem is with the filter driver they install. Now filter drivers are for the file system, but presumably they have something like that for the registry as well.
